Durant dix ans, à partir de 1990, le photographe a saisi, en noir et blanc, au grand angle et en carré, la foule de deux rues commerçantes de Chengdu, la ville dans laquelle il fut lui-même animateur d’une boutique. Tranchant radicalement dans la foule, soulignant d’un coup de flash visages et vêtements, il livre un document unique sur la façon dont l’apparence vestimentaire occidentalisée s’est substituée à la norme de l’uniforme traditionnel dans une Chine commençant sa transformation. Loin des images anecdotiques ou lourdement symboliques réalisées souvent par les reporters occidentaux opposant nouvel et ancien Empire du Milieu, il nous guide dans un monde complexe où il redonne, en accord avec l’attitude de ses sujets, une place à l’individu.

For ten years, beginning in 1990, the photographer captured, in wide-angle and square black and white, the crowds in two commercial streets in Chengdu, the city where he was himself the owner of a boutique. Cutting sharply into the crowd, emphasizing faces and clothes with a flash, he delivers a document unique in presenting the way westernized clothing was replacing the traditional uniformity of Chinese apparel. Far from anecdotal or heavily symbolic images often produced by Western reporters who oppose the old and the new in the Middle Kingdom, he guides us through a complex world in which he gives back individuality to his subjects.
